The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
