The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
